Project Safeguard

Denver, Colorado

Cause Description:
Project Safeguard is a fourteen-year-old non-profit organization committed to helping battered women and their children escape the cycle of abuse and violence. In 1997, Project Safeguard assisted over 8,400 victims of domestic violence. Safeguard’s services help empower victims to leave abusive situations and “end” the violence in their lives. Stopping the cycle of violence helps make our communities safer for all. We help victims of abuse who cannot afford a lawyer to obtain temporary and permanent restraining orders “free of charge”. The first acts of violence that most children witness are not on television or at the movies – they are acts of violence in their own homes. Violence against women is the single major cause of injury to women – more frequent then auto accidents (U.S., Surgeon General). 95% of domestic violence victims are women assaulted by men (FBI Uniform Crime Reports). Yearly an estimated 3.9 million women are assaulted. About one quarter of all the murders in the U.S. take place within the family. And almost 1,500 women annually are murdered by their intimate partners – husbands, ex-husbands, or boyfriends. In 1997, in Denver, at least 14 deaths were the direct result of domestic violence. (Denver Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee, Project Safeguard). Many researchers believe that these figures underestimate the actual number of women that are affected by violence. Surveys of American couples show that 20 to 50 percent have suffered violence regularly in their marriages. (Statistics taken from the Better Health & Medical Network on America On Line.)
