Africa Action

Washington, Washington DC

Cause Description:
Africa Action is the oldest organization in the U.S. working on African affairs. Our mission is to change U.S.-Africa relations to promote political, economic and social justice in Africa. We provide accessible information and analysis and we mobilize popular support for campaigns to achieve this mission. Africa Action focuses on three priority campaigns: The Campaign to End Genocide in Darfur, The Campaign to End HIV/AIDS in Africa and The Campaign to Cancel Africa's Illegitimate Debt. The work of Africa Action is grounded in the history and purpose of its predecessor organizations, the American Committee on Africa (ACOA), The Africa Fund, and the Africa Policy Information Center (APIC), which have fought for freedom and justice in Africa since 1953. Continuing this tradition, Africa Action seeks to re-shape U.S. policy toward African countries. Africa Action's work is guided by a set of core beliefs: - We believe that the U.S. has a special historic responsibility to Africa. - We believe that racism has been and is a major determinant of U.S. policies toward Africa, Africans and U.S. citizens of African descent - We value Africa and the people of Africa and seek to work in partnership with Africans - We believe in the principles of consultation, openness, accountability and consensus
