Comics for Change
"Through the power of art and words we can inspire to learn more about ourselves and others; to remind us who we are, and that we are not alone."
- M. Basham, Director of Comics for Change
What is COMICS FOR CHANGE
Cartoons are becoming increasingly important as a major tool not only in education, but also as a tool for cultural and social survival. No longer are cartoons associated with just Saturday morning and the Sunday funnies. Cartoons are quickly becoming recognized as a true universal language.
Comics for Change Goals
A. To encourage literacy, education, cultural exchange, and social activism through comics
B. To conduct teaching artist workshops in schools and other groups in the use of comics as a tool for social change with an educational component on refugee awareness. Comics for Change will be working with and promoting the programs of RESPECT Refugee based in Winnipeg Canada and headed by Marc Schaeffer. Along with the comic and art instruction, there will be an educational and cultural exchange that will take place between refugee students and non-refugee students.
C. Promote Comics for Change via Distant Education. The first Comics for Change workshop via distance instruction will be with six students at the Oru refugee camp based in Nigeria.
D. To offer teachin artist workshops and provide course materials for teachers to incorporate a Comics for Change program into any lesson plan or curriculum.
E. Comics for Change hopes to establish relationships with other educational/cultural exchange organizations and nonprofits who are involved with edia literacy in developing countries. Comics is an ideal media form for those special populations who do not have access to computers and other technology. Other areas of media Comics for Change hopes to expand into will be animation and digital storytelling projects and workshops.
