Cause Description:
We are an innovative, not-for-profit, non-government-funded legal aid program. We represent poor people for reduced fees and sometimes without charge. Most of our cases are SSI and Social Security disability, but we also do some consumer bankruptcy and consumer fraud. Since June 1997, when we began operations, we have won over $25 million for our clients in back benefits and projected future benefits. We have taken part of the traditional legal aid program's caseload and made it self-supporting, freeing up their scarce funds for use in other areas that can never be self-supporting. We ultimately hope to generate surplus revenue to help subsidize the provision of free legal help to those who cannot afford to pay.
