There are now over 100,000 Boston residents who are age 55 or older. In the next 20 years that number could grow by almost 50%. What does that mean for Boston? It means better opportunities for local children. Nearly 75% of 4th grade students are not proficient in reading. Retirees have free time, experience and a desire to help. For over a decade Generations Incorporated has connected older adults with the children who need them most. We target children who are having difficulty in learning to read. We offer elementary aged children intensive help through one-on-one relationships or in small groups. By offering instruction through caring relationships, our volunteers help children recover lost ground. Last year our 305 volunteers provided 48,000 hours of service to 3,400 students.
