Midland Teen Court, established in 1986 to serve the youth of Midland County, provides alternative sentencing for young offenders, ages 10 through 18 or still in high school, by a jury of fellow teens. Constructive sentences include community service hours, evenings to serve as a teen juror, and possible attendance at a class, an essay or letter of apology. The program stresses responsibility, accountability, and increases ownership in the community. Volunteer youth serve as teen jurors or teen attorneys. All participants learn more about our legal system. Those who successfully complete their sentence within the state set 90-day referral period have the citation dismissed with prejudice, keeping doors open for future choices by having the offense removed from their record.
