Because of the low adoption rate at the Valencia County Animal Shelter, Pick of the Pound, Inc. was formed to help find homes for many of the wonderful animals at the shelter. Working with shelter personnel, we take animals out of the shelter and place them in foster homes. The animals are tested for heartworm or feline leukemia, vaccinated, spayed or neutered and then put up for adoption. Our efforts started in Septembber of 2000. In only 5 years we have found loving homes for over 1500 animals. We do not euthanize for treatable conditions such as heartworm. This results in vet bills that are not covered by our standard adoption fee. We depend on donations to help these special needs animals and to continue our efforts.
