- Selected Cause: Massachusetts Citizens for Children
Boston , Massachusetts
The mission of MCC is to prevent the abuse and neglect of our state's children. MCC is the site of Prevent Child Abuse Massachusetts, and hosts the toll-free 800-CHILDREN number for our state, which anyone can call to receive child abuse prevention information. It is also home to the 2,000-member Campaign for Children, which issues newsletters, reports, and Calls to Action to its members, creating a constituency of citizens that can speak out for our state's children. The Massachusetts Kids Count project, part of a state-by-state data initiative of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, is a program of MCC that helps Massachusetts monitor the status of its children on several indicators of well-being. MCC was recently awarded one of only three grants in the country by the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to pilot innovative child sexual abuse prevention programs. To guide this effort, 20 private and state agencies have come together to form the Massachusetts Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Partnership, under the direction of MCC. The Partnership will soon be selecting three Massachusetts communities to pilot and evaluate these new approaches to child sexual abuse prevention. MCC works to eliminate child abuse and to build family supports across the state, educates and mobilizes citizens to speak out for needed children's policies and programs, and helps Massachusetts monitor the status of its children. As an independent organization, MCC accomplishes its goals through public education, citizen action, legislative advocacy, public opinion polling, and through the media. [view full description]
