The Environmental Medicine Consortium brings together highly qualified veterinarians and environmental scientists to work on important questions affecting the health of wildlife and aquatic species. It endeavors to support the study, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control of conditions which affect the health of the environment on global, international, national, ecosystem and local levels through education and research. There are over 70 current projects including: The assessment of the impact on human contact on the population health of mountain gorillas in Africa Health management of red wolves being re-released in North Carolina. Studies on how best to manage feral cat colonies and their impact on wildlife. Research into the immune function of highly endangered species such as the Mongolean Pallas' Cat and rare species of rhinoceros. Efforts to solve specific health problems in rare wild carnivore species. Development of improved anesthesia techniques for wildlife, including large species such as elephants. and many more. The consortium is the major force involved in bringing environmental concerns to the curriculum of young veterinary students in the United States. 1. Improve opportunities for veterinary scientists and other professionals to receive training in disciplines addressing environmental medical issues. 2.
