The Child & Family Network Centers is just one of 35,000+ groups listed by members at iGive. Here's a little more detail on them, as provided by members or the organization itself:
CFNC was started in 1984 by a group of mothers living in Alexandria public housing when they learned that all 17 of their children had failed kindergarten. Determined to help their children, the mothers hired Barbara Fox Mason, a talented teacher who shared the parents’ resolve to improve the circumstances for at-risk children. Mason started the preschool program with six children in one room of a housing project. Their efforts met with immediate success, as all six children were recognized by the public school system as gifted.
Nearly a quarter of a century after that modest beginning, Mason oversees five accredited preschool programs for nearly 200 three- and four-year-old children in Alexandria’s and Arlington’s poorest neighborhoods. Over the years, CFNC programs have grown not only in reach, but also in depth. Now, in addition to nationally accredited preschool, CFNC provides comprehensive family support and health services. Today, CFNC is widely recognized as one of the region’s top preschools.
